BOING

A boy lost his ball in the street. A red and orange and blue superball. He threw it against the sidewalk and it bounced far and away along Sesame Street. It rolls and stumbles and slips into an uncovered manhole. It falls and falls and falls and falls and falls and falls and falls. It comes to halt in a hollow thousands of miles beneath the surface. It lifts and falls and lifts and falls again.

A boy finds a cardboard box beside a dumpster. The box has fallen from the dumpster. The boy finds a potato battery that has not been damaged nor does it rot away. He takes the battery into his backpack and marches off to try it out.

BOING

A boy watches alongside the banks of the Hudson River as an old timey passenger vessel pulls into the dock. Crowds of confused people line the side of the ship, screaming and gawking and pointing at Manhattan. The hull is weather worn and shredded at various points. Painted gloriously along the side is the single word: WONDER.

BOING

A boy wanders through Central Park towards the playground. He finds a small crowd staring up at a nearby tree. Sitting high atop the tree is something that looks like an eagle, but bigger and bigger and bigger. The bird seems to be staring down at the crowd, but not at anyone in particular. It lets its wings flow out, the crowds oohs and awws. It leaps up and takes flight and disappears.

A boy wanders along afterward, passing a man with a large broadsword.

BOING

A boy is desperate to ignore the shadowy, ashen figures that he starts seeing in the streets. Blinks because he thinks the black masses filling the sidewalks on every horizon are eye-floaters. Runs when he realizes they aren’t.

Stares at the thing he sees burning in the sky to avoid looking at the shadows.
